What To Do When You Hit A Really Bad Shot? And you will!

. If you're head explodes just because you hit a really bad shot then you're probably going turn a bad shot into a bad round. You need to accept the fact that every golfer (even Tiger and Phil) will sometimes hit really bad shots. That means you’re going to make your share of bad shots every round. It’s a fact. Accept it!!! It’s your bad shots and how you react to them that will affect how good a golfer you will become.

WHAT SHOULDN’T YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE A BAD SHOT?

  • Bang your clubs on the ground!
  • Jump up and down and scream like a three year old!
  • Turn away and not watch the shot!
  • Complain to your playing partners about all the bad breaks you’re getting.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE A BAD SHOT?

  1. Accept it was a bad shot and that every golfer has MANY bad shots.
  2. Watch every bad shot because at the very least it will make finding the ball easier. Quite often you can learn what you did wrong by watching the flight of the ball.
  3. Next, decide how you can minimize the damage already done! Don’t turn one bad shot into a triple bogey. Make sure you only lose one stroke!!!
  4. Then you should try to objectively analyze what happened in your swing to cause the bad shot and if you can, try to figure out what not to do next time so you prevent it from happening again. (Not everyone will be able to do this.)
  5. Finally, after you’ve learned what you can from watching and analyzing the bad shot, FORGET ABOUT IT!!! Don’t think about it again. Remember the most important shot in golf is “The Next One”. Just keep concentrating on your next shot.

Bad Shot Quota System

Start your round thinking that you have a quota of “free” really bad shots to use up but you don’t want to go over your quota. For example let’s say you are a 15 handicapper. Start off with a quota of ½ your handicap or 8 (rounding up) really bad shots per round. Then when you have your first really bad shot don’t get mad. Just make a mental note that one of your quota of really bad shots is used up. Then just concentrate on making the next shot a good shot. After each round you can adjust your “quota’ up or down as necessary.

Most golfers are better at remembering all their bad shots than their good ones. That’s because bad memories carry negative images which are often accompanied by anger and adrenaline which burns those images into our brains. You need to focus more on your good shots. Make a point to remember, the glorious feeling of hitting the sweet spot and the soaring ball flight of a good shot.

The number one thing necessary to succeed at golf is a positive attitude. Those who “get mad” concentrate on failure rather than concentrating on success. Use the bad shot quota system to stop obsessing about those bad shots. If you really have to beat yourself up about a bad shot, please wait until after the round to do it.
